Tuesday October 18th, nearly 40 Courtice music students attended the Toronto Symphony Orchestra's Compose your own concert event.  Students had the opportunity to experience a world class orchestra reconstruct such classics as Ravel's Bolero, play new music such as Mason Bates' Mothership, and accompany grade nine concerto competition winner Tiffany Yeung in Carmen Fantasy.  Our budding musicians were able to vote on which pieces they wanted to hear the TSO perform through online voting and a very enthusiastic clap-o-meter for the finale.  Respectful, engaged and excited, their eyes and ears soaked up the Debussy, Stravinsky, and Maxime Goulet (who was on hand to explain his composing technique) that filled the impressive concert hall.  There was some groaning that one of the voters choice winners was, Gioachino Rossini's William Tell Overture, as it fills them with dread that they are late to class.  From Tuba mutes to the vibra-slap to flexitone and computer as an instrument, these cougars were inspired to carry on exploring music and reaching for new heights in and outside of band.

That nasty-tempered wizard Rumpelstiltskin is back in this engaging adaptation.  Griselda, a four hundred year old witch, tells Rumpelstiltskin that in order to become the most powerful force in the kingdom, he must possess a child of royal birth.  The wizard plots and schemes.  He spreads the word that Laura, the miller’s daughter, can weave straw into gold.  Since the kingdom is bankrupt, she’s whisked off to the palace and ordered to spin and spin.  With Rumpelstiltskin’s help she delivers the gold.  She has a high fee to pay — her first born child.  When Laura marries the prince and produces an heir to the throne, she has twenty-four hours to guess the wizard’s name or lose her child.

It’s the fabulous 50s and the little town of Shingleville is rife with suspicion and speculation.  Sprout’s Malt Shop is filled with quirky characters, and one of them is guilty of murder!  After all, they all have a motive when the reprehensible and unreasonable Jerry Atrick falls over dead after an unexpected blackout.  It’s up to Sheriff Colin Allcars to find out who is responsible for the foul play.  Was it the trouble-making greaser, Noah Count?  Or the bubbly and annoying know-it-all cheerleader, Bobbie Pinz?  Surely not her sidekick, Shirley Knott!  Could it have been the waitress, Dee Lighted, who takes your order but brings you whatever she feels like?  How about the sultry starlet or the dim-witted jock?
